He was admitted to the department of economics of Hebei University in 1978;
In 1982, he was admitted to graduate school of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and majored in western economics;
After graduating in 1985 with a master's degree, he went on to take a doctoral degree in western economics;
In 1988, he received his doctorate in economics from the Chinese Academy of social sciences;
1992-1993: director of the editorial department of economic research;
1994-1995, deputy director of the institute of economic research;
Since 1995, he has served as the president and legal representative of China economic reform research foundation.
From 2006 to 2010, he served as a member of the central monetary policy committee.
In 2012, he served as the vice president and president of the council of the institute of comprehensive development and research.
In June 2015, he was again elected to the monetary policy committee of the central bank.
Fan Gang's main research fields: macroeconomics and institutional economics.
He has presided over a number of scientific research projects supported by NSFC, China economic reform research foundation and other institutions. Commissioned by the government to carry out research and provide consultation and suggestions to various government departments and local governments on various economic policy issues. In recent years, he has been employed as an economic consultant by the world bank, UNDP, ESCAP, OECD and other international organizations. He has been invited to many countries for lectures, visits, academic conferences and cooperative research, and published many papers in international economic journals. His arguments on China's economic problems were often quoted by domestic newspapers, magazines and TV media.
